DETAILED DESIGN OF MECHANICAL, STRUCTURAL, AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS
This Midwest-based cement producer had a need to upgrade the additives storage and handling at their plant. This resulted in the decision to refurbish the Clay Storage Structure, and to install a new Clay Hopper at the existing Stamler Feeder. Additionally, a new additives handling system was installed including: an additives storage building, a surface feeder and approach ramp, a 520’L x 110’H x 312 tph belt conveyor and three dust collectors. Industrial Ally was responsible for the Mechanical, Structural and Electrical detailed design of the overall project. Weekly progress and coordination telecon meetings were held with the client throughout the project to update and coordinate the design progress between US based and Mexico based personnel. Paramount to the project’s success was early issue of the PE sealed Clay Storage Structure structural drawings and calculations for permit submittal. This required close collaboration with the owner and its environmental engineer. The project faced challenges of coordinate / elevation discrepancies, and also several scope changes necessitated by the client including; addition of a dust collector, specification of a new conveyor drive and a late stage change of the additives conveyor supplier due to the Covid19 pandemic. Essential in managing the project through these challenges, and to capture an accurate representation of existing conditions, was to establish the project baseline with laser scanning and subsequent 3D modeling. Safety, Maintenance, Access, Constructability, and Interference Check (SMACC™) reviews at the 0%, 30% and 75% point of detailed design completion ensured all scope changes were captured.
